During our pilot trip, we caught more than twenty different species of fish. These included the rare cobia, large barracudas, enormous jack crevalles, impressive otolites, cubera snappers, red snappers, large stingrays, bull sharks, and many more. The fish seemed to be everywhere. All this was done with relatively light equipment, allowing us to vary our techniques: casting with poppers, stickbaits, and small lures, jigging with light jigs, trolling for large barracudas, and fishing with live bait. Not only did this result in many beautiful catches, but above all, it was a lot of fun. The fishing season runs from mid-October, when the rainy season is over, to around mid-June. A long period with excellent conditions and plenty of opportunities to plan your trip.

Off the coast of Guinea-Bissau lies the Bijagós Archipelago: a true natural gem consisting of about a hundred virtually untouched islands, vast mangroves, and snow-white sandbanks, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. The area has been designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve and is known for its exceptional biodiversity. It is not without reason that it is considered one of the best sport fishing destinations in West Africa.

The fish:

• Giant barracuda – the rocket of the Atlantic Ocean. Lightning fast, aggressive and equipped with razor-sharp teeth. Guaranteed explosive bites.
• Jack crevalle – true gladiators that never give up and fight to the bitter end.
• Horse-eye jack – a wrecker that severely tests both the endurance of the angler and the equipment.
• Pompano jack – compact, strong, and notorious for its brute strength.
• Leerfish – the queen of surface hunting. Spectacular, aggressive, and fighting to the last meter.
• Red snapper – powerful bottom dwellers that mercilessly attack jigs and bait and then give their all in short, fierce drills.
• Cobia – curious, massive, and tireless. Known for its endless runs and impressive strength.
• Otolite – noble and exceptionally strong. A fish that combines power and endurance in long, technical fights.
• Rays – their enormous weight makes every drill a heavy and spectacular test of strength.
• Bull shark – massive and dominant, capable of literally pushing fishermen to their limits.
• Hammerhead shark – impressive silhouette, powerful jumps, and pure adrenaline.

In addition to these species, the archipelago is home to countless other fish that underscore the exceptional richness of this area.

Main fishing techniques:

• Casting: The explosion on the surface when a jack or barracuda strikes is forever etched in the memory. Every cast can be a hit.
• Jigging (classic & light jigging)

Classic jigging produces brutal bites from red snappers, cobia, and otolites, among others.
Light jigging combines light tackle with surprisingly large fish, resulting in intense and memorable fights.

• Fishing with natural bait: Ideal in estuaries and lagoons. Versatile, relaxing, and often very productive.
• Fishing with live bait: Simple, effective, and incredibly exciting. Large bait attracts large fish: jacks, barracudas, cobia, otoliths, and sharks.
• Trolling: Perfect for locating large predators. Every bite can yield a monster.
• Surfcasting: From deserted beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. From snapper to bull shark: every cast is a surprise.
• Fly fishing: Technical and challenging. When a horse-eye jack or barracuda takes the fly on the flats, the experience is unparalleled.

Fishing areas:

The strength of the Bijagós lies in the enormous variety of fishing spots:

• River mouths and mangroves – natural nurseries full of barracudas, jacks, cobias, and otoliths.
• Rocky reefs (“patates”) – classic hotspots where predatory fish concentrate.
• Bays and lagoons – shallow and clear water, perfect for surface fishing and fly fishing.
• Narrow passages – strong currents, lots of action, and the chance to catch big fish such as cobia, leerfish, and sharks.
• Drop-offs and rocky plateaus – ideal for jigging and bottom fishing for heavy opponents.
• Wrecks – limited but highly productive spots for jacks, snappers, and cobia.
• Beaches and sandbanks – perfect for surfcasting with surprisingly large catches.

Boats:

The lodge offers two safe and high-performance boats, specially designed for sport fishing in the Bijagós archipelago:
1. Open 8m50 – Yamaha 200 HP (new, 2025). The flagship boat, with top fos some shade, fresh out of the shipyard, combines power, comfort and modernity for long and demanding outings. Spacious enough for three fishermen and one captain.
2. Open 7m50 – Yamaha 100 HP (flawless maintenance). Fully serviced and carefully maintained, this boat offers excellent maneuverability and optimal navigation comfort. Suitable for two fishermen and one captain.

On-board equipment:

Versatile as the boats are suitable for all techniques: casting, trolling, jigging, popping, bottom fishing. Their open format offers space, comfort, safety and maneuverability. Thanks to their speed and reliability, they allow quick access to the best fishing spots of the Bijagós.

Fishing gear:

We recommend to bring your own fishing gear and other equipment. Including terminal tackle like splitring, swivels, hooks and weights. However! If you don’t have this materials, no worries! The lodge offers rental equipment and we can set that up for you. Simply mention this during the booking process and together with you we will select the right package.

The suitable fishing gear on the boat for this destination may look as follows:

• Casting rod around 2.4m in length with a 150gr casting weight (for poppers and stickbait casting). Combined with a strong spinning reel (Penn Authority or Slammer minimum6500 or similar) and braided line with a minimum of 60lb breaking strength.
• Slowpitch jigging rod around 2.1m in lengt hand about 100gr weight. With a small spinning reel (Penn Authority or Slammer 4500) or specific slowjigging reel. Spooled with braiding lines with a minimum of 50lbs breaking strength.
• Live bait and trolling rod around 2.4m in length and a 100gr casting weight. Combined with a strong spinning reel (Penn Authority or Slammer minimum6500 or similar) and braided line with a minimum of 60lb breaking strength.
• For surfcasting we recommend a 4-4.5m surfcasting rod with a 250-350gr casting weight accompanied by a large spinning reel with hgh spool capacity.

This all you need. And of course a set of poppers, stick baits, small subsurface lures, trolling lures and jigs. All equipped with 4x strong swivels and hooks/trebles. Don’t underestimate the power of the fish in this area!!

We also recommend to bring plenty of strong swivels, hooks and circle hooks size 6/0 or 7/0 together with 150gr sinkers. These are needed for the successful (live) baiting technique. Plus zabiki rigs with very small hooks to catch livebait! And of course deep running trolling lures, leader material like monofilament or fluorocarbon (60lb / 80lb and 100lb for casting and live baiting).

To get to the Bijagos Archipelago, you fly to Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau, which we are happy to arrange for you. You will be picked up by an employee at the airport and taken to the transfer car. After a short drive through Bissau, you will board the transfer boat waiting for you at the port. Or, depending on your flight arrival time, we will book a hotel in the city center where you will spend the night, after which you will be taken to the location by boat.

The crew will help you carry your luggage to the boat and, upon arrival on the island, will escort you to the lodge where you will check in and begin your fishing adventure! The return journey follows the same procedure, with us coordinating your flight departure time with the requirements for the return journey, including an extra night in a hotel if necessary.
