Fishing

Amberfish is located on Kvaløya, close to Tromsø, in an area that is ideal for anglers who want to combine Northern Norway with comfort, short boat runs and varied fishing. The harbour is right on Kvalsundet, so you can start fishing almost as soon as you leave the dock. This makes Amberfish an excellent choice for groups who want to maximise productive fishing time without having to make long runs every day.
One of Amberfish’s biggest strengths is the combination of sheltered water and easy access to the open sea. In windy or changeable conditions, Kvalsundet still offers plenty of opportunities to target cod, coalfish, halibut and redfish. When conditions are settled, the boats can head farther offshore towards the well-known banks and plateaus, where the chances of encountering bigger fish increase significantly.
Fishing around Kvaløya is highly varied. Along the edges of the sound, around depth changes and where shallow water drops into deeper channels, there are productive areas for halibut and cod. Where current meets concentrations of baitfish, coalfish and cod can feed aggressively. Redfish are mainly targeted in deeper water and along steep drop-offs, where heavier tackle and precise depth control are required.

Well-known fishing grounds

Mehallgrunnan and Steingrunnan are well-known fishing grounds around 15 nautical miles from the accommodation. These areas consist of broad plateaus and underwater structure that can be reached quickly in good weather with the camp’s safe, well-equipped boats. For dedicated sea anglers, these are exactly the kind of grounds where larger cod, halibut, coalfish and redfish can be expected.
Malangsgrunnen is an outstanding offshore mark when the weather really plays ball. It lies farther offshore, roughly an hour’s run away, and is locally known as a very productive area for big cod and other large fish. These are the days when preparation, a reliable weather window, fuel planning and good navigation are essential.

Main target species

Cod is one of the main target species at Amberfish. Fishing can be extremely productive in spring and during periods with large concentrations of baitfish, but cod remain a reliable target outside the peak periods as well. The best results are often found on plateaus, drop-offs and edges where depth changes and current come together.
Halibut are another major attraction at Amberfish. The source information specifically identifies Kvalsundet as one of Norway’s better halibut areas and mentions a record fish of 196 kg. Productive techniques include controlled drifting with dead bait or large softbaits over sandy flats, channels and transition zones.
Coalfish provide speed, power and spectacular fights. When fish are actively hunting over deep water or along current lines, fishing with pilkers, shads and speed jigs can produce fast action. Large coalfish are also formidable opponents on relatively light tackle.
Redfish require a different approach. They are generally targeted in deeper water using heavier sinkers, strong lines and accurate depth control. For groups who want more species variety alongside the classic cod and halibut fishing, redfish are an excellent addition.
