Fishing

Koppangen Brygger is located right on the waterfront in the quiet fishing village of Koppangen, near Lyngseidet in Troms. It is an especially attractive base for sea anglers who want to reach productive fishing grounds quickly. Close to shore you can already encounter a wide range of species, from small baitfish to large halibut, without having to travel much more than half a mile. This makes Koppangen a highly efficient destination for groups who want to maximise fishing time without relying on long boat runs.

The fishing area is typical of Northern Norway, with fjord structures, steep mountain sides, shallow areas, drop-offs and deeper water all within easy reach. This mix is exactly what makes the area so interesting: baitfish often gather along edges, current seams and transition zones, while cod, coalfish, redfish and halibut benefit from the variety between sheltered water and more open ground. Productive inshore fishing also makes Koppangen a strong option in changeable weather, as long runs offshore are not always necessary.

Sea fishing from Koppangen

For keen sea anglers, the focus is on the classic Northern Norwegian species. Large cod is one of the main target fish. In spring and early summer, cod can often be located around structure and deeper water, with baitfish and current creating concentrated feeding zones. One of Koppangen’s biggest advantages is the chance of quality fish close to shore: this is not a destination where you have to run far offshore to find action, as the nearby coastal waters can be surprisingly productive.

Coalfish is another important sport fish. These powerful, fast predators often hunt actively in the water column and are ideal for dynamic fishing with jigs, shads and other fast-worked lures. Finding a shoal of coalfish can result in spectacular fights and non-stop action. This makes the species ideal for mixed-experience groups: less experienced anglers can quickly get into fish, while seasoned anglers can specifically target the larger specimens.

Redfish requires a different approach. This species is generally targeted in deeper water, with particular attention to drop-offs and changes in depth. Koppangen therefore offers much more than active casting and drifting: anglers can systematically work different depths and bottom structures. The combination of fjord water, coastal structure and deeper ground makes it easy to build plenty of variety into a fishing day.

For many guests, halibut is the ultimate dream fish. These coastal waters hold plenty of fish, and even large halibut can be encountered surprisingly close to shore. Halibut fishing requires patience, reliable tackle and an understanding of sandy flats, edges, current zones and baitfish concentrations. Because travelling distances can remain short, several shorter sessions or key tidal windows can be fished effectively in a single day.

Sheltered fishing and short boat runs

A major advantage of Koppangen is its practical location. The houses are right next to, or very close to, the jetty and boats, so the fishing day can start without complicated logistics. This is particularly useful for groups wanting an early start, a quick midday tackle change or the flexibility to react quickly to changing weather. With productive grounds close by, more of the day can be spent actually fishing.

The fjord setting also provides opportunities for more sheltered fishing. When conditions on more open water are less comfortable, anglers can often continue fishing in protected coastal zones or within the fjord. This increases the number of fishable days and makes the destination attractive both to serious sea anglers and to families or mixed groups.

Freshwater fishing, nature and activities

Koppangen offers more than sea fishing alone. A river is approximately 0.1 km away and a lake around 0.05 km away, adding a genuine freshwater option right on the doorstep. This can be particularly appealing for guests wanting a rest day or some variety, especially when combined with the spectacular scenery of the Lyngen region.

The surrounding area offers marked hiking trails, glacier walks, ski touring in the Lyngen Alps, snowshoeing and bicycle rental. This also makes Koppangen a good choice for families or groups where not everyone wants to spend every day at sea. In winter and during the shoulder seasons, the combination of mountains, fjord scenery and the Northern Lights adds another dimension to the experience.
