Fishing

Larseng Kystferie is located on the coast south of Tromsø, overlooking the sea, Bentsfjordtinden and the Malangen peninsula. Its setting combines a peaceful rural holiday atmosphere with easy access to Tromsø and the productive waters around Kvaløya, Malangen and Rystraumen. For anglers who want to experience Northern Norway without being completely remote, Larseng is an excellent choice: the boats are close to the accommodation, the fjords are easy to navigate and there are plenty of options for both active and relaxed fishing.

Most of the fishing takes place in coastal and fjord waters with strong tidal flow, varied depths and interesting transitions from shallow banks to drop-offs and deep channels. Rystraumen is well known for consistently holding fish. Current is often the engine behind Norwegian sea fishing: where large volumes of water are squeezed through narrower passages, food is concentrated, baitfish become active and predators are never far away.

For sea anglers, this means Larseng lends itself to a wide range of techniques. From the boat you can target cod, coalfish, haddock, pollack, ling, tusk, redfish and halibut. Shore fishing is also possible at Hella and Rystraumen. This makes the destination ideal for mixed groups where not everyone wants to spend every day on the boat, as well as for anglers who fancy a few extra hours from the rocks after a day afloat.

Cod, skrei and fjord fishing

Cod is one of the main target species in this region. In winter and early spring, fishing for big cod and migrating skrei can be particularly exciting, while spring, summer and late summer still offer excellent sport for resident cod in the fjords and coastal waters. Around steep drop-offs, hard bottom, kelp beds and transitions into deeper water, pilks, shads and natural baits can all produce quality fish.

The Tromsø area is famous for productive northern fjords. At Larseng you have the advantage of reaching fishable water quickly. That means less time travelling and more time working different marks. When the wind changes, the fjords and sheltered shores often provide useful alternatives.
Halibut and big predators

For many anglers, halibut is the ultimate Northern Norway target. The area around Kvaløya, Malangen and Tromsø has exactly the type of structure these fish favour: sandy flats, channel edges, tidal seams and deep water close to shallower ground. At Larseng, dedicated halibut fishing can easily be combined with searching for cod and coalfish. Large shads, deadbait rigs and controlled drifts over likely plateaus are all proven approaches.

Patience is important when targeting halibut, but the variety of water lets you build a smart plan for the day. Start on cod or coalfish, switch to halibut when the tide is right, then finish on a current seam or deeper drop-off. That tactical flexibility is exactly what makes Larseng attractive to anglers who prefer reading the conditions rather than simply running long distances.

Coalfish, pollack and active lure fishing

In addition to bottom fishing, Larseng offers excellent opportunities for active lure fishing with shads, light pilks and other artificials. Coalfish can produce blistering runs in strong current and over deep water. Pollack are often found around rocky shorelines, kelp beds and steep edges. If you enjoy casting and light jigging, this can be superb sport, especially when baitfish are present or current is pushing past structure.

This variety works well for groups with mixed experience levels. Beginners can get started quickly with pilks and shads, while more experienced anglers can fine-tune their approach with lighter rods, vertical techniques, casting and precise control of depth and drift.
Redfish, ling and tusk

On deeper marks, redfish, ling and tusk add another dimension. This style of fishing usually calls for heavier tackle, accurate anchoring or controlled drifting and careful use of the sounder. When conditions are calm, spending part of the day fishing deep can be a great complement to classic cod and halibut sessions. The main advantage is the variety: every day can be planned differently according to weather, wind and tide.
Shore fishing

Another advantage of Larseng is the shore fishing at Hella and Rystraumen. Not every Norwegian destination offers such easy shore access. It is perfect for arrival or departure days, short evening sessions or for anyone in the group who prefers a more relaxed programme. Because of the strong current and relatively deep water close to shore, the fishing can be surprisingly productive.
Nature, hiking and Tromsø

Larseng is more than a fishing destination. There are hiking opportunities right around the accommodation, while Tromsø is within easy reach for restaurants, culture and city facilities. In the right season this is also a wonderful place to see the Northern Lights, while the midnight sun creates almost endless fishing days in summer. It is an excellent fit for anglers looking for a complete Northern Norway experience combining fishing, nature and comfort.
