Fishing

Træna Arctic Fishing is located in one of the most distinctive areas of the Norwegian coast: far offshore from Helgeland, in the middle of an archipelago of islands, skerries, shallows, reefs and open water. The destination lies right on the Arctic Circle and combines rugged ocean fishing with sheltered options around the islands. For sea anglers, this is exactly the type of area Norway is famous for: abundant structure, strong currents, plentiful natural baitfish and short distances between accommodation, boat and fishing grounds.

Træna offers exceptionally varied fishing. Around Selvær and the surrounding islands are countless shallow banks, channels, current seams and drop-offs where cod, coalfish, haddock, pollack and halibut hunt. With thousands of islands and shallows, it is almost always possible to find more sheltered fishing when wind or sea conditions are less favourable. In good conditions you can head farther towards open water, where the chances of larger fish and deeper grounds increase.

Træna is a very interesting destination for cod. Rocky bottoms, sandy banks, kelp edges, deeper channels and current-rich transitions create many potential marks. In spring and summer, pilkers, shads and natural bait can produce both numbers and larger fish. On days with a good drift, edges from shallow to deeper water are often productive, especially where baitfish or active seabirds are present.

Halibut is one of the species that makes Træna particularly attractive to anglers targeting big fish. Around the islands there are many sandy areas, slopes and transitions where halibut may hold. A controlled drift with large shads, baitfish or natural bait over sand and gravel is often the best approach. The mix of sheltered water and open-sea structure makes it possible to try several types of halibut marks in a single fishing day.

Coalfish and pollack also suit this fishing area perfectly. Around steep rock faces, current points, kelp beds and shallow plateaus, highly active fishing can develop. For anglers who prefer lighter tackle, these species are ideal targets with slim pilkers, shads, softbaits and casting lures around island edges. Coalfish may also gather in large schools, creating fast and exciting sport.

For anglers who enjoy deep-water fishing, Træna offers opportunities for redfish, ling and tusk, depending on location, depth and conditions. The sturdy boats and proximity to productive water allow a flexible fishing day: target halibut or cod on the banks first, then move deeper when conditions permit.
The natural surroundings are an important part of this destination. Træna is one of Norway’s smallest municipalities but is renowned for its spectacular coastal scenery. The striking rock formation on the island of Sanna is a landmark for sailors and anglers. Long summer nights around the Arctic Circle add light and atmosphere to the trip, while birdwatchers are also well catered for: more than 220 bird species have been recorded in the area.

Why choose Træna Arctic Fishing?

Træna Arctic Fishing is for anglers who appreciate remote, authentic and fish-rich Norway. Rather than staying at a standard fjord location, you are based in a genuine coastal archipelago with water all around you. The short distance from accommodation to boat and fishing grounds makes the destination practical, while its offshore location gives it a true sense of adventure. For groups that want plenty of fishing while still valuing comfort, nature and a special setting, Træna is an excellent choice.

The destination is particularly suitable for experienced sea anglers and groups able to adapt to wind, drift and current. With so many islands and underwater features there is a great deal to explore. At the same time, modern accommodation, good piers and solid boats provide a comfortable base. This makes Træna attractive both to dedicated fishing groups and anglers looking for a distinctive Norwegian destination with atmosphere and fishing right on the doorstep.
