Fishing

Dyroy Holiday is located on Dyrøya in Northern Norway, at Mikkelbostad on the sheltered southern side of the island. The destination combines the peace of a protected coastal setting with direct access to several productive fishing areas. For anglers, it is an excellent base because the island is surrounded by Dyrøysundet, Faksfjorden, Solbergfjorden, Tranøyfjorden and Mjøssundet. These waters offer varied structure and allow you to choose the most suitable area depending on wind and season.

The sheltered position on the inside of Dyrøya is a major practical advantage. At northern destinations, being able to fish in protected water can be just as important as the presence of big fish. Several sounds and fjord arms are within easy reach, so you are not dependent on a single offshore route. On calm days you can explore the wider fjord areas and outer grounds; in changeable weather the sounds and fjords provide plenty of opportunities for active fishing closer to shore.

Fishing around Dyrøya is classic Northern Norway: powerful, varied and rich in species, with realistic chances of cod, pollack, redfish, flatfish, halibut, ling, tusk and herring. This makes the destination ideal for groups with different fishing preferences. Halibut anglers can target transitions between sand, shell, rock and drop-offs, while active lure anglers can fish for coalfish, cod and pollack with pilkers, shads and lighter tackle. For those who enjoy deep-water fishing, redfish, ling and tusk are attractive target species.

Cod and coalfish
Cod is one of the key species in this region. It is often found along drop-offs, in tidal sounds, on banks and where shallow water falls away into deeper channels. For many anglers, cod provides the backbone of the fishing day and can be caught effectively on pilkers, shads and natural bait. Fishing can be very active in spring and early summer, while deeper edges and current lines remain interesting later in the season.

Coalfish and pollack call for a more active approach. When baitfish are present, both species can feed aggressively and provide spectacular sport on lighter tackle. Pilkers, slim jigs and shads fished along steep edges and in moving water suit the area perfectly. For anglers who enjoy hard-fighting fish on relatively light gear, this is one of Dyroy Holiday’s main attractions.

Halibut
Halibut is one of the most exciting target species in Northern Norway. Around Dyrøya there are several areas where current, depth changes and bottom transitions come together – exactly the conditions that make targeted halibut fishing worthwhile. Large softbaits, shads, dead baitfish and controlled drifting all work well. The area is extensive enough to explore several drifts and spots during the week rather than repeatedly fishing the same ground.

Redfish, ling and tusk
For anglers who enjoy fishing deeper water, the fjords and deep channels around Dyrøya offer opportunities for redfish, ling and tusk. These species usually require heavier tackle, accurate depth control and a steady presentation. The combination of deep fjord water, drop-offs and relatively sheltered approaches makes this style of fishing easy to plan. On settled-weather days it is an excellent alternative to the more active cod, coalfish and halibut fishing.

Sheltered and varied fishing

One of Dyroy Holiday’s strongest points is the variety of water available. Dyrøysundet, Faksfjorden, Solbergfjorden, Tranøyfjorden and Mjøssundet provide exceptional flexibility. You can shape each day around the conditions: start with a halibut drift, switch to casting or vertical fishing for cod and pollack, and, when the weather is calm, try deeper water for redfish or ling. This variety makes the destination suitable for both experienced sea anglers and groups looking for a broad fishing programme.

Surroundings and activities

Beyond the fishing, Dyrøya offers peace, beautiful views and unspoilt nature. There are scenic walking routes across the island and plenty of opportunities for photography and exploring the Northern Norwegian landscape. Dyroy Holiday therefore appeals not only to dedicated anglers but also to travellers who want to combine fishing with relaxation and nature. The grill hut and optional hot tub close to the sea add to the holiday atmosphere after a long day on the water.
