Fishing

Grytøy Havfiske is located in a particularly attractive part of Troms, near Harstad. The destination combines the rugged character of Northern Norway with relatively sheltered fishing between islands, fjords and sounds. For sea anglers, this is an excellent combination: you stay right by the water, the boats are practically on your doorstep and the fishing grounds begin almost as soon as you leave the jetty.

The nearby islands and fjords provide good protection from wind and weather. This makes Grytøy Havfiske especially appealing to anglers who want to maximise their effective fishing time. In favourable conditions you can head out towards more open water, while in stronger winds there are often still good options in the shelter of the fjords and surrounding islands.

Its location on Toppsund and around Grytøya gives this destination a classic Northern Norwegian fishing character. There is plenty of structure, current, deep water and shelter. This variety means the fishing is anything but one-dimensional. You can actively target coalfish and cod, while strategic areas also offer opportunities for halibut and wolffish. For groups, it is also convenient that there is both a compact rorbu for four people and a larger accommodation for up to eight, each matched with suitable boat options.

Cod
Cod is one of the most obvious target species around Grytøy. In sheltered water and along deeper edges, it can be targeted in several ways. Jigging with pirks, fishing shads just above the bottom, or using the fishfinder to locate baitfish and feeding fish can all be effective. In Northern Norway, cod is not only a dependable species but can also reach impressive sizes on the right day.

Coalfish
Coalfish often provides the most active fishing. This species hunts throughout the water column, especially where current, baitfish and depth changes come together. For anglers, that means dynamic fishing: searching with the boat, reacting to marks on the chartplotter and fishfinder, and regularly changing depth. The powerful runs of coalfish make this an exciting style of fishing for both experienced anglers and keen beginners.

Halibut
Halibut is one of the main reasons anglers travel to Northern Norway, and this area provides an excellent base for targeting them. Sandy areas, edges, current seams and sheltered transitions between fjord and open water can all be productive. Successful halibut fishing requires patience and focus: controlled drifting, keeping close contact with the bottom, presenting large shads or natural bait and staying alert when a fish takes.

Wolffish and other species
Wolffish is another potential target species. It usually requires a different approach from cod or coalfish: fishing close to the bottom around rocky ground, with bait or lures presented slowly and precisely. The area also offers opportunities for other northern sea species, keeping the fishing varied and making the destination suitable for groups with different preferences.

Sheltered fishing and more open water
One of the biggest advantages of Grytøy Havfiske is the flexibility of the fishing area. In many destinations, wind conditions directly determine whether fishing is possible. Here, the nearby islands and fjords provide extra options for making a workable plan. Sheltered zones are ideal for targeting cod and coalfish around edges and channels. In calmer weather, anglers can head farther out into more open parts of the area, where there is more drift, greater depth and access to open water.

For Worldsbestfishingtrips guests, this is particularly attractive because the destination suits several types of angler. Those fishing in Northern Norway for the first time can gradually get used to the boat, the water and the depths, while more experienced anglers can actively search for bigger fish and more challenging marks.
