Maio is an island that is part of the island group called Cabo Verde. The most famous island among fishermen is Sao Vicente where many go for fishing on Marlin. Maio is much less known and therefore there are considerably fewer fishermen. And that is exactly what the adventurous fisherman is looking for. Challenge, different spots and many possibilities in terms of fishing and fish species. Here you can find all you want! Popping, jigging, shore fishing, trolling, chumming, drifting, bottom fishing and of course spin fishing are all possible here. So how varied do you want it to be?

The fish you can catch here are almost endless. Horse eye jack, wahoo, dorado, marlin, sailfish, amberjack, yellowfin tuna, groupers, snappers, various shark species such as mako, tiger, nurse, hammer and lemon sharks as well as rays, bonefish and blue runners. The options are almost endless here. In addition, large specimens are also caught, with sharks up to 4.5 metres and over 600 kilos and rays of 2 metres diameter and 200 kilos have already been caught here. In short, you are going to run out of time!
Because Maio is not so well known, there are no large streams of tourists and it is relatively quiet and you can enjoy the sun, sea, nature and the wonderful climate. It is therefore not surprising that this is the place where Michael has lost his heart to fishing. Michael is originally Dutch but has been living on this island for several years and works here as a fishing guide and is also a fanatic fisherman.

Michael has done a lot of scouting work here in recent years and with success! All types of fishing are imaginable here. Jigging, trolling and (bottom) fishing with natural bait but also casting from the shore or for sharks and rays. During trolling, especially tuna, wahoo and dorado are the main species and sometimes marlin and sailfish in the right period in this fishery. But also several tiger sharks between 200 and 500 (!) kilos are regularly caught here. So also varied fishing is certainly possible for the enthusiast.
The fishing for shark and billfish is based on strict catch & release unless the fish is too severely damaged or has no chance to survive. Other fish are occasionally used for dinner but are also put back if possible. The pictures speak for themselves, so let your imagination run wild and think about what you would like to catch here! You will certainly run out of time!

There are several accommodation options with 4 persons or a 6 persons villa. The houses are all within walking distance of the sea and there is a communal swimming pool and private beach to relax after fishing. The houses are neat, tidy and have more than enough comfort. The rooms are provided with ventilation and also the bed linen, towels and final cleaning is included.
You can choose between several apartments.
Casa Djarmai is our best recommendation. There are three two-person apartments here with a living room with kitchen studio and refrigerator, an outdoor terrace for evening relaxation and a separate dopuche with toilet. The separate bedrooms have a double bed. There is also a 4 person apartment here with a spacious living room, two showers with toilet, and two bedrooms each with a double bed. There is also a beautiful and spacious terrace for the early or late hours. All apartments include wifi as well as water, electricity, bed linen and towels.
Villa Luxe: This luxury holiday home is located right by the pool of the complex and overlooks the sea. There are 3 bedrooms, each with a double bed. The house is finished in high comfort with an open kitchen and refrigerator with ice machine. This is the best home available on the island with stunning sea views from the terrace with garden table and chairs. It also features airconditioning. The house has a max capacity of 6 people.
Villa bifamilaire: max 4 persons. This villa has 2 bedrooms, 1 room with a large double bed and a bedroom with two single beds. The kitchen is fully equipped and equipped with all daily necessities. There is a private bathroom with shower and toilet and a private garden with a dining table and bench. You can also use the large swimming pool by the sea. Electricity, gas, water and final cleaning are included in the price.
Villa Cristophe: max 5 persons This villa has 2 double rooms and an extra one can be added if a 5 th man is present. The kitchen is also fully equipped with stove, oven, kettle, fridge with freezer etc. The house is 20 meters next to the fishing guide, so it is also possible to get breakfast service in this house: with coffee, tea, fresh bread hard and soft, some pieces of fruit, soft drinks, boiled or fried eggs, every morning the table is set and breakfast prepared. The costs are 8,50 euro per person per day. The house is located in a quiet area, has hot and cold running water and because you are staying next to the fishing guide you can quickly get answers to any questions and after consultation also use the car for groceries.
Villa 10: max 4 persons. This 4 persons villa has 2 bedrooms, 1 room with a double bed and 1 room with two single beds. The kitchen is equipped with the daily necessities including a luxury coffee machine. It also has a private bathroom with shower and toilet. A private garden with dining table and 2 sunbeds. Villa 10 has sea views and is one of the luxury cottages we can offer you. Water, gas, electricity and final cleaning are included in the price and there is also Wi-Fi available in this villa. You step out of your backyard to stand directly at the large swimming pool which is equipped with plenty of sun beds. This villa is situated in a nice and quiet location. The house is within walking distance of the sea.
These boats are used here:
- Dimeu 40 foot with 2 x 400 HP diesel engine
- Faeton 780 with a yanmar inboard diesel
- Faeton 680 with a yamaha outboard f100
- Orca fish seaview with a yamaha outboard f60
All boats are equipped with the necessary safety equipment and equipped with GPS and fishfinders from Lowrance. The Dimeu, Faeton 780 and 680 are equipped with fighting chairs and a front cabin. The Diimeu and Faeton 780 are the boats which are most fished with and are suitable for up respectively 6 and 4 people. If the group is larger than 6 persons, the 680 is also used. The Orca and the open boat are used for smaller groups and lighter fishing. On all boats is also a spare engine mounted for safety purposes.
It goes without saying that the boats are equipped with all the necessary fishing equipment. There is a big assortment of 20, 30, 50 and 80 lbs equipment with the necessary lures and other stickbaits. High-quality materials from well-known brands such as Shimano and Penn are used.
But also for shore fishing all the necessary materials are available. Self-designed rods are available to cast heavy bait as well as shorter ones when fishing from the beach. Every spot here is different and requires different material and Michael will be happy to help you.
The location is run by Michael and he is a Dutchman. He is the absolute fish freak that you would like to have on every location as a guide. He loves fishing and he knows all the fishing spots on the island like the back of his hand.
To get around on the island it is possible to rent a car or a quad bike. There is a white Toyota Pick up available for up to 5 people or a Yamaha Grizzly 4 x 4 Quad for or 2 people. Super fun and both perfect and well maintained.
On site there is a restaurant of the Maio Fishing Club. Every morning an extensive breakfast with fresh juice, bread, coffee, etc. is served here. For this you will be picked up from your stay and after breakfast you go directly to the fishing spot of that day. If on shore lunch is also served here. In the evening you will enjoy a private dinner with local dishes specially and freshly prepared for you. These costs are automatically included in the quotation.
Initially you will fly to the island of Santiago with the capital Praia. There you will spend the night and the next day you take the local plane to Maio on Monday, Wednesday or Friday. Since the flight times change from time to time (after all, it remains Africa) this is the best option. On Praia we of course arrange a hotel to stay the night.
As this fishing trip is entirely composed according to your wishes, indicative prices are difficult. But assuming 3 days / nights of shore fishing and 3 days of boat fishing, including all meals, guide, fuel for the boats and first night in Praia in a double room including breakfast, the indicative price is € 1.300,- per person for a group of 4 anglers. Please note! This is a indicative price and is subject to availability of boats and flight tickets, choice of boat and period from booking to the actual trip. The costs for the flights are extra.
