During our pilottrip in 2025 we caught over 20 species of fish, including the unique COBIA (!), big barracuda’s, enormous Jack Crevalles, the unique Otoliths, Cubera snappers, red snappers, big stingrays, big bullsharks and numerous other species; it just did not stop, there was fish everywhere. And all of this using relatively light material, having lots of fun applying different techniques: casting poppers, stickbaits and small lures, jigging relatively light jigs, trolling for big barracudas and live baiting small baitfish.

The season begins in mid October when the rains have disappeared and runs till around mid June. A period long enough to offer many fishing opportunities and to book your trip! Sport fishing in the Bijagós: a paradise for enthusiasts

Off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, the Bijagós archipelago is a true natural jewel: a hundred wild islands, untouched mangroves and immaculate sandbanks bathed by the Atlantic Ocean. Classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and listed as a World Heritage Site, this sanctuary attracts sport fishermen in search of authenticity and thrills. With its fish-filled waters, it is considered one of the best fishing destinations in West Africa.

The fish:
  • Giant barracuda: the rocket of the Atlantic, its sharp teeth and furious rushes promise fast, violent and unforgettable fights.
  • Jacks: true gladiators of the Bijagós, they never give up once hooked.
  • Horse-eye jack – a ball of nerves that tests the fisherman’s resistance and the equipment.
  • Pompano jack – formidable, it offers fights of rare intensity.
  • Leerfish: queen of surface hunts, it strikes with incredible brutality and offers tense fights to the last meter. A noble and spectacular catch.
  • Red snappers: true bulldozers of rocky bottoms, they rush on jigs or baits to then give everything in powerful bottom fights.
  • Cobia: curious, massive and tireless, the cobia is recognized for its endless rushes and colossal strength. An encounter that marks for life.
  • Otoliths: noble and powerful fish, they offer spectacular fights mixing strength and endurance. When an otolith takes a bait or a jig, the fisherman knows he has hooked an exceptional opponent, capable of delivering a battle as technical as it is exhausting.
  • Rays: their weight and power transform each fight into an exhausting and spectacular tug-of-war.
  • Bull shark – heavy, massive, capable of bringing the fisherman to his knees in fights of rare intensity.
  • Hammerhead shark – with an impressive silhouette and devastating rushes, they offer fights where adrenaline reaches its peak.
As well as many other species that will show you the richness of this incredible archipelago.

Techniques:

  • Casting: The thrill of seeing a lure explode on the surface under the attack of a jack or a barracuda remains engraved forever. Each cast can trigger a sudden strike.
  • Jigging (vertical jigging & light jigging)
    • Classic jigging: dropping a jig into the depths, working it and waiting for the brutal strike of a red snapper, a cobia or an otolith: adrenaline guaranteed.
    • Light jigging: with lighter gear and mini jigs, you can surprise real monsters: red snappers, jacks, cobias or otoliths. The contrast between the finesse of the equipment and the power of the fish offers unforgettable fights, where every second is pure adrenaline.
  • Bait fishing. Perfect for exploring estuaries and lagoons, it allows you to vary targets and chain catches, from snapper to cobia, via otolith. A convivial and often very productive technique.
  • Live bait fishing. The oldest, the simplest… but always formidable. With a well-presented live bait, you attract the largest predators: massive jacks, giant barracudas, cobias, otoliths or even sharks. Each strike turns into an explosive fight.
  • Trolling. The ideal method to track down large moving predators. You never know what monster will strike the lure: a giant barracuda, a massive cobia or an unpredictable leerfish.
  • Surfcasting. Set up on a pristine beach facing the Atlantic, you cast a natural bait and… anything can happen. Barracuda, red snapper, cobia, otolith, jack, ray or even a bull shark: each cast is a lottery of thrills.
  • Fly fishing. A technical and refined challenge, reserved for the most patient. When a horse-eye jack or a barracuda rushes at a fly in the clear water of the flats, the emotion is indescribable.
In the Bijagós, each fish is a legend. The barracuda for its brutality, the jack for its unfailing combativeness, the leerfish for its spectacular strikes, the red snapper for its bottom power, the cobia for its extraordinary endurance, the otolith for its nobility and intensity, the ray for its oversized weight, and the bull or hammerhead sharks for fights that mark a lifetime. Thanks to the variety of species and possible techniques – from surfcasting where anything can happen to light jigging, the house specialty – the Bijagós establish themselves as the ultimate playground for any sport fisherman in search of pure emotions.

Fishing spots:

The Bijagós archipelago, in Guinea-Bissau, is a recognized fishing paradise for the richness and diversity of its fishing areas. Each environment offers its share of surprises, allowing you to vary techniques and target a wide variety of species.
  • Estuaries and mangroves, true natural nurseries, shelter barracudas, jacks, cobias and otoliths. Casting and bait fishing are particularly effective here, with firm strikes and quick fights.
  • “Patates” (rocky reefs), the classic spot where predators concentrate.
  • Flats and lagoons attract with their shallow, translucent waters, ideal for popping, light casting or tropical fly fishing. Jacks, pompanos and leerfish deliver spectacular surface strikes there.
  • Passes, subject to strong currents, concentrate passing predators. Massive cobias, leerfish and sharks are regularly encountered here, for intense fights paced by the tides.
  • Rocky shoals and drop-offs are the realm of red snappers, cobias, otoliths and rays. Here, jigging and bottom fishing provide powerful battles where each fish tries to regain its shelter.
  • A few wrecks, though not numerous, complete the range of spots. True underwater refuges, they attract jacks, red snappers and cobias, and prove very productive for fans of jigging or live bait fishing.
  • Finally, beaches and sandbanks offer a unique experience, where surfcasting or shore casting can be practiced, with good chances of capturing barracudas, jacks, red snappers or even bull sharks.
Thanks to this exceptional variety, the Bijagós constitute a complete destination, where surface strikes, bottom fights and memorable encounters succeed one another in a preserved natural setting, classified as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
