Yellowtail Kingsfish hotspot

Yellowtail Kingfish and More on the Unique Robinson Crusoe Island off the Coast of Chile!

Fishing:

Join us on this UNIQUE group trip to Robinson Crusoe Island, part of the Juan Fernández Archipelago in the South Pacific. This remote destination is a Chilean nature reserve and one of UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserves. It is also one of the very few places in the world where large—and abundant—Yellowtail Kingfish can be caught, along with many other species.

This exclusive group trip is limited to a maximum of 7 participants and is organized by visreis.nl. The trip will be hosted by John Smit, who personally visited the location during the pilot trip and knows all the ins and outs of this unique adventure.
The Yellowtail Kingfish (Seriola lalandi) is a true bucket-list species that can only be caught in a few places on Earth. It is at least as strong and fast as the famous Giant Trevally, and it can be targeted just as effectively by casting poppers and stickbaits. This spectacular, lightning-fast, and incredibly powerful game fish is guaranteed to get any angler’s adrenaline pumping.

The waters around the island hold many other species as well, including several that are endemic to the area. One example is the Sierra, a unique wahoo-like fish found only in this region. There is also a local halibut species that can grow to over one meter in length, as well as corvinas, groupers, and various other species. These fish are mainly targeted by jigging and are known for putting up a strong fight.
During the pilot trip we caught Yellowtail Kingfish up to 35 kg, along with many other species.
The crew at the lodge we partner with is highly experienced and consists of passionate sport fishermen themselves. They know the waters, the conditions, and the fishing spots extremely well and will do everything possible to put you on the fish.

The boats are spacious, stable, modern, and fast, and comfortably accommodate four anglers. For this group trip we will operate two boats, each with four anglers on board.

A Unique Setting:

Located in the South Pacific, about 700 km off the coast of Chile, Robinson Crusoe Island is one of the few places on Earth where nature remains almost untouched and where only the local population is allowed to fish.
The moment you arrive, you will be amazed: a stunning island with around 900 inhabitants, surrounded by a deep-blue ocean with crystal-clear water teeming with marine life. You’ll notice it immediately when you are welcomed by the island’s sea lions.
We rarely see such an abundance of fish and marine life. Besides countless fish species, the waters are also home to orcas, sea lions, lobsters, sea urchins, and much more. As a result, the birdlife is spectacular too, including the large and majestic Albatross.

It truly is a one-of-a-kind destination.
The story of Robinson Crusoe is inspired by events that took place on this island. In 1704, the Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was left here after leaving his galleon (which later sank). He survived alone on the island for four years. Visitors can still see the cave where he lived and the lookout points he built.
The island was later named Robinson Crusoe Island after the famous novel.
Today, the island has a small but well-developed community. There are comfortable houses, paved roads, motorized transport, and various local facilities. The lodge we stay at offers comfortable beds, excellent food and drinks, friendly staff, beautiful boats, and an experienced crew. Best of all, everything is within walking distance.

Arrival and Stay on the Island

After arriving on the island by plane, you will board a water taxi that takes you to the village. This is your first real encounter with the surrounding waters and the breathtaking scenery of the island. Along the way you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the coastline, with rugged, arid cliffs on one side and lush green hills and mountains on the other, covered in endless flowers and overlooking the deep-blue ocean.
Upon arrival in the village of San Juan Bautista, the staff will take care of your luggage and bring it to the lodge while showing you to your rooms. Later that day, the team will provide a short orientation while you enjoy a welcome drink. In the evening, a special tradition awaits: the welcome dinner, where freshly caught lobster is served as the main course.

Your stay on the island is comfortable, relaxed, and surprisingly luxurious, and the local people are incredibly friendly and helpful. The modern lodge—part of a family-run business—features a spacious central area with a large dining table and comfortable seating area, which opens onto a large terrace overlooking the ocean.

Each room includes:

  • Two single beds
  • A private bathroom with 24/7 hot water
  • A toilet
  • A private terrace with ocean views

The climate is very pleasant. Because the lodge is located close to the sea, evenings cool down nicely and daytime temperatures are usually comfortable rather than excessively hot.

Food and Hospitality:

The food is of a very high standard. In the morning, a generous breakfast is served, and dinner in the evening is often a three-course meal. Everything is freshly prepared and many ingredients are sourced locally from the island and surrounding waters.
One of the most unique experiences is lunch during the fishing days. Lunch is freshly prepared on the boats by the crew. The boats anchor in a small sheltered bay where the crew cooks and sets up a neatly arranged table.

While lunch is being prepared, you can:

  • Continue fishing
  • Go snorkeling with the sea lions
  • Enjoy the incredible underwater life
  • It’s an amazing and truly unique experience.

After Fishing:

After a full day of fishing and dinner at the lodge, it’s wonderful to relax on the terrace with a drink while enjoying the ocean view. And for the true die-hard anglers, there’s always the option to walk back to the pier with a rod and try a bit more fishing before the day ends.
The lodge is located within walking distance of the boats and the large pier, which is also a great place to fish. Because the village itself is small, everything is within walking distance, which makes exploring very easy.

The Rest Day:

  • On the rest day, you can decide for yourself how to spend your time. There are several options:
  • Shore fishing from the pier
  • Walking through the village
  • Hiking into the surrounding mountains
  • Relaxing on the terrace with a drink while sharing fishing stories with your fellow anglers
  • There is plenty to do, or you can simply take the day to relax.

Facilities:

  • The lodge also offers several convenient facilities to make your stay even more comfortable:
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Laundry service included
  • Staff assistance with transporting your rods and fishing gear to and from the boats
  • All of this ensures a very comfortable and enjoyable stay on the island.

Boats

The lodge operates two modern and spacious boats built in 2025, both specifically designed for this type of fishing and for the local conditions around Robinson Crusoe Island.
The boats are 11 meters long, extremely stable, and feature high sides, a large foredeck, and a spacious aft deck. Thanks to their hull design, they provide a very comfortable ride even in offshore conditions.

Each boat is fully equipped with:

A two-level casting platform on the foredeck with leg supports at the bow
Soft cushions along the high gunwales, allowing anglers to lean comfortably while jigging
24 rod holders positioned on the top structure and around the boat
Garmin electronics
115 hp Yamaha engines
VHF marine radio for constant contact with the authorities
Life jackets for all passengers
A fold-out lunch table
A removable sunshade, which can be set up during lunch
Bluetooth speaker system for music on board

Safety

Safety on board is a top priority. Before departure, the crew is required to report to the port authorities how many people are on board and in which area they will be fishing.
Life jackets are available for everyone on board. The crew is highly experienced and always attentive to safety, both while navigating and during fishing activities, including when landing large fish.

Equipment

For this trip we recommend strong, high-quality saltwater tackle capable of handling powerful fish such as Yellowtail Kingfish.

Your tackle should be suitable for:

  • Casting large poppers and stickbaits
  • Speed jigging
  • Slow jigging
  • Fishing depths are typically 40–100 meters.
  • It is very important that hooks, split rings, leaders, and other terminal tackle are extremely strong and of top quality, as the fish here are powerful and conditions can be demanding.

Casting with Poppers and Stickbaits Recommended setup:

Rods

  • Suitable for PE 6–8 lines
  • Casting weight 60–150 grams
  • Length approximately 240–270 cm
  • Compatible with reels with minimum 15 kg drag

Reels
  • Line capacity 250–300 meters of PE 6–8 braid (approx. 0.40–0.45 mm)
  • Minimum drag 15 kg
  • Line & Leaders
  • Braided line PE 6–8
  • Shock leader 120–180 lb

Lures
  • Poppers and stickbaits in various shapes and sizes
  • Weight range 60–250 grams
  • Be sure to bring floating stickbaits as well
  • The Yellowtail Kingfish in these waters can grow very large and are extremely explosive and powerful fighters. Because you will often be fishing relatively close to rocky structures, it is advisable to fish with slightly heavier tackle (“over-powered”) to maximize your chances of landing that fish of a lifetime.

Speed Jigging Recommended setup:

Rods
  • Suitable for PE 6–8 lines
  • Capable of working 200–300 gram jigs
  • Length approximately 140–200 cm
  • Compatible with reels with minimum 15 kg drag

Reels
  • Line capacity 250–300 meters PE 6–8 braid
  • Minimum drag 15 kg
  • Line & Leaders
  • Braided line PE 5–7
  • Shock leader 100–150 lb

Jigs
  • Bring plenty of jigs weighing 150–350 grams
  • It is particularly important to bring enough heavy, slender speed jigs (250–350 grams). Strong currents can occur at the best fishing spots, and the local Sierra (a wahoo-like species) is known to occasionally bite through leaders.

Slow jigging can also be very effective, especially in shallower areas. Recommended setup:

  • Slightly lighter rods
  • Slow jigs weighing 100–150 grams
  • Of course, we will assist and advise you further during the preparation phase. Before the trip we will organize a central pre-trip briefing, where we will go through all equipment recommendations and preparations in detail.
